R. J. Cyr Chosen for Installation ExcellenceIn 1983, R.J. Cyr Co. installed the first electrified automatic monorail in Canada at Chrysler Windsor Minivan Assembly Plant. Ten years later, we achieved another Canadian “first”: the installation of a floor-mounted electrified Montamatic for the handling of engine cores at Ford Windsor Aluminum Plant (WAP). Cyr Superintendent Mike Mailloux was field coordinator for this extraordinary project. What’s significant for us, for Ford and for our industry, is there is no installation in North America with a higher demand for engineering and installation accuracy. The American distributor for the German manufacturer explains why: The Montamatic intelligent monorail system incorporates 120 custom carriers, each with an on-board computer. This gives each carrier reporting ability independent of the main controller. If controller function is interrupted by memory failure, power surge or spike, or operator error, system restoration is nearly instantaneous: carriers will advance to the next station, communicate status and continue functioning. One km of extruded aluminum track comprises the inverted monorail, which has 38 robot stations per circuit performing sand casting, machining and assembly operations. The key to the success of the project: ultra-precise positioning of the 1200-lb. capacity carriers at each station. How precise? ”Nine different core packages are involved. There are 40 core machines, 80 robots and twin monorails fabricated in 170 twenty-foot sections. For the program to succeed – and to achieve the .003” robotic positioning accuracy, 170 sections of monorail would have to be installed with a total system deviation, horizontal and vertical, of less than 1/4”. That is precisely what R.J. Cyr Co. did, and this despite a floor with 1/2” to 2” runout. Bleichert Inc. was chosen for the project because of the depth of its technical capability (60 overseas installations), and because the company demonstrated it could accelerate, decelerate and corner the sand cores consistently and with out damage – an achievement that assures highest consistency of aluminum poured in the first stages of the line. Similarly, R.J. Cyr Co. was chosen to provide installation of the monorails, as well as peripherals and hot core machinery, because it could meet the extraordinary demands for engineering excellence and follow-through. The total elapsed time for R.J. Cyr Co.’s installation of this complex project was eight weeks turnkey. According to Bleichert engineer Jerry Aulph, “The project is straight, flat, secure, and on-schedule.”
