Rebuild Team Established for Coil Handling Equipment

Thousands of “Heppenstall” steel handling devices were put in service in the decades following WWII.  Engineered in Germany and manufactured in Germany, Pittsburgh and Windsor, the equipment uses a patented gripper/latching device to lift coils up to 80,000 lbs.

Now R.J. Cyr Co. has established a specialty rebuild team at its Windsor headquarters to rebuild these unique and efficient material handling systems.

Explains Guy Moore, “The problems with older Heppenstalls are similar:  pivot points are worn, damaged or bent.  Pins and bushings are out of tolerance.Link arms and latches need remachining.  You need to magnaflux for cracks and repair or replace if required.

We’ve developed a program that puts a Heppenstall back ‘in spec’ in ten working days or less, while giving it years of added service life.”

Marvin Fields, R.J. Cyr Co.  Plant Manager, established the team and is responsible for the rebuilding procedures.  Cost-effective rebuild programs are also available for many more “conventional” material handling devices.  One particular specialty: hinged steel conveyors such as those used where the path has steep inclines or bends, or where a corrosive environment – or immersion in liquid – makes rubber belts impractical.
